"FREEDOM HALL IS JUST ANOTHER WORD FOR...."

GRATEFUL DEAD
6/15/93
FREEDOM HALL
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

THE FIRST OF A TWO NIGHT STAND IN LOUISVILLE AT VENERABLE FREEDOM HALL. The police were a heavy presence on the fairgrounds, but the music never stopped inside. Not as magical as the legendary 6/18/74 at the same venue, but a good show. Especially for 1993.

RUPP ARENA ROCKIN'!

CC

AS AN ARDENT UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE FAN I RESERVE THE RIGHT NOT TO SAY very much about this show. Only that it is not as good as ANY of the Louisville shows they ever did. And that I can't help but take great delight when Phil Lesh snidely comments upon how many empty seats there are! It's only that as a Kentuckian who misses living in his state that I include this show, and that I grew up less than 25 miles from Lexington and Rupp Arena. Nostalgia(sigh). As much as it pains me to admit the version here of  the old Bobby Womack classic "It's All Over Now" IS the finest Dead version I have ever heard. It's a rollicking good one that stops me every time I hear it. It's well worth a listen--even if you have to forget it was recorded where the Wildcats play basketball.

Let Freedom Ring!

Let Freedom Ring!

Grateful Dead Live at Freedom Hall on 1974-06-18

1974.The "Wall of Sound" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_of_Sound_(Grateful_Dead). One drummer not two. The "Wolf" guitar. The Bluegrass State. Old Freedom Hall, once a Mecca for Midwestern Basketball but always the real  Madison Square Garden of the area(sorry Rupp Arena!).. Some people think this is one of the greatest shows of all time(unfortunately I do not) and certainly one of the greatest from 1974(an acceptable verdict from one of my favorite years of Grateful Dead performances). And while a consenus has grown that this version of the "Weather Report Suite" is one of their very best versions, I would much rather the attention be focused upon the transcendtally great "Morning Dew" encore, which I humbly assert is the greatest version of that classic power ballad. The delicate interplay between Jerry Garcia and Keith Godchaux as the coda begins, with Godchaux tinkling ivories at the furthest end of the piano and Garcia listening very carefully, answering in the softest call and response ever recorded onstage for the band, before he gradually ascends with that amazing solo propelling the band to one of the most satisfyiing crescendos in their careers is beyond words. For those 15 minutes Louisville feels like Vallhalla(incidentally the name of its world famous golf course, designed by legend Jack Nicklaus) and that is why my first onemoresatnitestream had to highlight this great show from 1974.

Welcome!

Welcome! This is my first post for a new Grateful Dead blog, for Deadheads and non-Deadheads. For newbies and those of you with A Touch of Grey--or no hair at all! Every Saturday I will recommend a show for you to stream for free, which could be from any era of the band. The first batch will be Kentucky shows because I am a native Kentuckian. In other words I'm a biased Deadhead. But once that's out of my season I will vary the selections. Maybe the picks will be random or appear as such. But then again I might have some sick scheme up my own, some pattern like Garcia playing a blues scale on Tiger or the Travis Bean. I also want to provide you with recommendations for books, merch and anything else I stumble upon of interests to our community. And I'll throw up posts from time to time that might be of interest to the community. Thank you for you interest, and I'm out with the following quote:
